Well, smartphones and tablets have become so ubiquitous that we now need support. It's time.

Important photos, videos, contacts and music are now distributed on small, easy-to-delete, easy-to-erase and highly blackmailable devices. Do not miss this at your own risk and danger.

In practice, there are several ways to address this potentially overwhelming task. These include some free methods - such as Google's permission to save your settings - and the cloud options of your mobile carrier. Or simply use a cable provided with your device to make media copies.

For the adventurous, there are apps that can be purchased to solve the problem.

Option 1: Google

Let Google manage some of your user data backups. Google backs up app data, Wi-Fi, passwords and other settings, if allowed.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu by tapping the Settings icon in the device status bar.

Step 2: Look for a backup and restore option or a privacy option, depending on the version of Android.

Step 3: Control your backup of personal data to allow Google to recover your settings and other data over time. Then, select Auto Restore, which allows you to restore automatic settings when reinstalling an application.

Now, when you migrate to a new device, your settings saved by Google are downloaded to your new device when you connect to the installer.

Step 2: Open the application.

Step 3: Follow the instructions to synchronize data with the cloud. When you want to access data in the future, open the application and choose the type of content, such as images or music. Find the file in the list and press and hold the file name to select it and download it.

Tip: Verizon and others also allow you to manage the data on your smartphone on a PC. In the case of Verizon, download the Verizon Cloud application on your PC and select Manage my content.

Option 3: cables

Manual backup of documents, images, videos and music if the manufacturer of your phone or phone does not offer obvious cloud options. Google can handle backup configurations (see Option 1).

Step 1: Remove the USB charging cable from the smartphone included with the supplied wall adapter socket.

Step 2: Connect your smartphone to a PC with the cable. The smartphone will be mounted as a player, like an SD card.

Step 3: Copy and paste the files from your smartphone to Windows using the Windows Explorer interface.

Option 4: Google Play Store app

Rerware's My Backup Pro, at $ 2.99, allows you to back up files to a local SD card in your phone or in the cloud, and then migrate your data to a new device. Backup copies can include applications, photos, music, videos, contacts and more.

Titanium Backup Pro Key Root, at $ 6.58, is similar, but is root oriented. Rooting is a way to unlock the phone that provides access to the ROM of the phone's file system.

Step 1: Visit Google Play Store on your device by selecting Play in the application drawer.

Step 2: Choose a backup application for My Backup Pro or Titanium Backup.

Step 3: Allow the application to install, then follow the instructions to configure it.
